Preliminary Statistics and other news

Statistics

Take a look at the Statistics page (menu at the top) to see what we've been able to learn from the One Name app.  I'm still learning the app so there will be more and better statistics in the future.

There are 58 profiles in the Study which means quite a few of the profiles need improving.  The number of the profiles in the Study is only a fraction of the large number of Flower/Flowers in WikiTree so there is a lot of opportunity to learn more about these families.

There are so many Flowers profile in WikiTree, separate from the Flower variant, that the app was unable to display the statistics.  It will require breaking down those profiles by generation or by geography in order to get the statistics, then add them back together.  That will take time.

More in the future.

The number of profiles and where they're located has necessitated  our dividing up the Study by geography.  This will make the work easier and should make the Study more interesting.

I learned today that there's also another Study @ WikiTree of just the Flowers variant but it has a page and nothing else, so I've asked the One-Name Project to conflate the two Studies since the members of this Study already include both variants of the surname and this blog includes both.

That's it for now.

Notable Flower and Flowers family members

The horizontal menu below the banner includes a page listing notable Flower/Flowers as we find them.  The link on that page goes back to their profile @ WikiTree.

I've decided to feature a very brief biography of one of these members of our larger Flower/Flowers family tree from time to time:

I'll start with Cyril Flower1st Baron Battersea, (30 August 1843 – 27 November 1907).

He was a noted portrait photographer - there are 116 portraits by him in the National Portrait Gallery, London.

You can learn more about him in his biography @ WikiTree where there are additional links to information about him.

If you're interested in the Flower/Flowers families, there is more information @ WikiTree and a One-Name Study that you can join.

Posts about the Study and the families are irregularly posted here.

Introduction

What is a one-name study?

"A one-name study is a project researching a specific surname, as opposed to a particular pedigree or descendancy of one person or couple. A one-name study is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Studies may include a number of family trees which have no link with each other."  Wikipedia

In WikiTree terms: "The ... Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the ... name. The hope is that other researchers ... will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the ... name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically; Individual studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically, by time period, or by topic (DNA, Occupations, Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. The Coordinator began this project because of hitting a brick wall on this family branch.

However, the purpose of the one-name study is broader than that: The study has a global scope; it includes research within countries or time periods where sources of genealogical data are readily available; and it will research and store all data in WikiTree as the core genealogical dataset."

So, the effort is to:

  • identify individuals with the surnames Flower and Flowers,
  • add them to the Study, by creating profiles for them at WikiTree.
  • compile statistics about the composite of those individuals: gender, geography, occupations, etc.
These efforts will, hopefully, provide a picture of the origins, migration, scope and number of people who share these surnames.

One-Name Studies are also the primary interest of the Guild of One-Name Studies.  This Study is not registered there, as yet, but there's hope that a member of the Study will have interest in the Flower/Flowers surname in England and Europe. There is a limit to the number of Studies the Guild allows.

Read more about the Study on the page About the Study.

This blog will be published irregularly and links will be posted to it on various social media platforms.

The blog will include any interesting information about the families, about individuals and will include photos when possible.

My particular family branch were in Delhi, Delaware County, New York.  I will post a brief family tree in the near future.

We always appreciate comments so we know we have visitors and so we can work in directions of interest.  Thank you.
